Get Your Hoop On!

Contemporary hooping is the creative work of professional performers, the medicine of healers, and a pure and simple pleasure for many; and it is community. Today’s larger hoops were introduced at music festivals in the mid 1990s, and Jan Camp invites you to make your own in this workshop. Then we can share some moves.
A common misperception is that hooping was invented in 1958 when the Wham-O Company started manufacturing lightweight plastic hoops for children. In fact, Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans played and exercised with hoops. Hooping around the waist was popular in Europe in the 14th century; and sailors, exploring the Pacific islands, connected the activity with hula dancing. Hoops have long been used in healing ceremonies and religious celebrations in many cultures, including American Indian and French Catholic.
