Creating an Alter Ego

Using a variety of visualization and drawing exercises we’ll create a character with powers beyond our normal abilities, an alter ego or an avatar, to be the channel for our art. Come prepared with an idea of a being that symbolizes you and frees you to create: a favorite totem animal, a mythological character or a creature from nature or popular culture. Based on the experiences I’ve had developing my BUNNY persona, we’ll draw, write and make a mask to get into the character. We’ll make an accordion fold book of our new identity. Techniques include contour drawings, painting, collage and assemblage. Experience a newfound freedom and leap into the skin of something you’ve always wanted to be.

Supplies:
Bring some reference material to work from. My original bunny is a 3 inch high figurine, but you can work from pictures in encyclopedias, statues, or other material for inspiration. It’s important that the image is compelling to you, even if you don’t know why. It will all be revealed in the process of the class.

Bring:
Scissors, utility knife, straight edge, bone folder, glue stick & heavy gel or adhesive such as ModgePodge..
6 sheets of good paper, such as BFK Rives, that measure 12” high x 18” wide
(OK to fold in the middle). This is for the book.
Collage materials, some patterned papers
Paint, markers, pencils, ink, and drawing tools
Needle & thread
Optional: Chartpak blender pen and fresh xeroxes if you want to do transfers
Optional: wire, feathers, ribbons or other specialized relevant material for constructing a mask. Note: All basic MASK materials will be provided but you will want to bring any findings to personalize your mask.
