The books and paintings highlighted in our February 2015 show are some of the many created over the past ten years by artists Jeanne Jabbour, Joell Jones, and Marcy Voyevod during a series of biannual art retreats. The 1991 Oakland hills firestorm brought them together; they lost homes and studios but found each other in the county-run support group for artist who were victims of the fire. For them, working together creates a synergetic experience and provides support to move past self limits.
In 2004 as a strong bond developed, they began to make a semi-annual ritual of equinox art retreats at a secluded space in west Marin. The ongoing intention of the retreats is to expand and explore beyond their artistic comfort zones. This experience has become a regular part of the equinox retreat, where pure being-in-the-moment combined with years of studio practice leads to creative play. The books can take many forms. Some tell a story or capture an inner state. They may contain words or be completely visual. The energetic color and form of the books are contained in different ways.
Between 2007 and 2011, all three artists participated in workshops with Sas Colby, who introduced them to the power of the book making. Theirs is loose, magical, and exploratory. Each folio has some personal meaning or intention just beneath the surface that help them to understand the images that show up in their individual paintings.
