Mapping Colors Show opens: August 2 at 6:00 p.m. Introducing Chealsea Wills. Highlighting the colors and patterns through the biodiversity of three distinct regions, this show uses the technique of eco-printing on silk to explore these regions. This show traces the journey of the artist over the last six months while she made her home in the highlands of central Mexico, the jungles of the Yucatan peninsula, and the wild windy ridges of Northern California. Each piece produced is one of a kind and the process mimics the principles of monoprinting using plants and every day objects. Eco-printing, also known as bundling, is a little known technique where the artist uses the relief of the images to create patterns on fabric. It was shared with her by Cory Gunter Brown and Cassidy Wright (TheMoon-Oakland.com) and inspired by India Flint. The unique and personal nature of the process pulled Chelsea outside to walk and look in each place and to notice the subtleties of each landscape. Chelsea Wills is a native Californian artist who has shown nationally and internationally. She is interested in working with biodiversity, place, and home. She uses participatory methods to work with communities in collaborative ways. Her training as an educator and community organizer inform many of the practices she uses working with people. She holds an M.A. in Education from University of California, Berkeley and a BFA from University of California, Santa Cruz. She works in a variety of medium including photography, social practice, and teaching. |
