PAINTING FROM A DEEP PLACE
… Why do I draw and paint?… It holds me to the earth. It makes me feel closer to both the world around me and the one inside myself…. I can draw the wind and the sound of chickens, paint with dust and ashes and vegetables as well as oil and acrylics, make paintings that may be a valid addition to the planet, or at least, valid additions to some viewers’ lives. I have no idea if it makes any difference in the scheme of things but it temporarily makes me whole. — Leigh Hyams, from her book, How Painting Holds Me on the Earth
It is to our detriment that we live in a culture that does not honor the internal world. In many cultures, the internal world of dreams, feelings, images and sensations is sacred. — Peter Levine
Take the time to drop deeper. Stay with the thought till it comes alive. Bring the energy to the line, to the thought, to the painting, to life. Opening to the realms of the vast inner world, free of conditioned constraints… moved past fear and ego… the work intertwines with life, becomes a meditation… an opening into the vastness of the unseen… the most vital part of existence. The energetic and spiritual realm. Find the stillness apart from the clatter and clutter of the mind. In that place of stillness the deeper work comes through. It is born of the spirit realm. —Joell Jones, curator, Painting from a Deep Place
